ABSTRACT

The education of intellectual disabled people was affected by the exclusion, segregation, integration, and finally the inclusion. The inclusion initiated in last decades of twentieth century, when new movements and important documentations resultant from worldwide conferences in favor of the disabled people inclusion in the regular educational system came up. This is a bibliographical study which generally aims to identify Theses and Dissertations present in the Coordenação de Aperfeiçoamento de Pessoal de Nível Superior (CAPES) website regarding the Curricular Adaptation and Intellectual Disability in the Context of Inclusive Education for the period between 1998 and 2013. As the National Curricular Parameters (Curricular Adaptations) came up in 1998, a temporal cutout of the essays published from this year on was made: Strategies for the Education of Students with Special Needs, which were considered highly important in order to understand the current adaptations and different levels. It was necessary to search about the goals, methodology and results of the Theses and Dissertations, selected among the files sent by CAPES to answer this study question, which was: What do the Theses and Dissertations show about the Curricular Adaptation regarding the Intellectual disabled student in the context of Inclusive Education. Nine dissertations and one thesis made part of this study. The data showed that among the ten publications, four are directly related to the curricular adaptation and intellectual/mental disability, five are referring the curricular adaptation and disabilities, and one is concerned about the curricular practices for mental disabled students. The most used study approach in these publications was the qualitative one, and the instruments for data collection were the documental analysis, observation, and interview. The definition proposed by the American Association on Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (AAIDD) was used to conceptualize the intellectual disability, and the Curricular Parameters were used for the curricular adaptations: Curricular Adaptations and “Escola Viva” Project – guaranteeing all the students´ access and permanence at school. The results showed that most teachers did not perform curricular adaptations as they did not know about their importance and also because teachers considered such adaptations a challenge.
