| Resumo |
A presente dissertação se dedicou ao estudo linguístico historiográfico do conceito de estrutura
elementar da significação produzido pela teoria semiótica de linha francesa. Dessa forma,
apoiamo-nos sobre a discussão historiográfica acerca da pesquisa histórica e de alguns aparatos
metodológicos desenvolvidos pela historiografia linguística, a qual tivemos contato através de
Altman (2004), Koerner (2014), Portela (2018) e Moreira, Santos e Portela (2021). A partir de
uma distinção fundamental apresentada por Altman (2004), construímos nosso trabalho como
formado inicialmente por uma crônica, ou seja, um levantamento de dados e sua descrição, e,
posteriormente o elevamos ao nível próprio da historiografia, com o desenvolvimento de um
discurso interpretativo acerca da crônica organizada. Então, a abordagem do corpus se inicia
com o texto fundador da disciplina semiótica e do conceito que tomamos por objeto,
Sémantique Structurale (GREIMAS, 1966) e segue para o texto que apresentou os primeiros
desenvolvimentos no quadro dessa noção, “The interaction of semiotic constraints”
(GREIMAS; RASTIER, 1968). Continuamos a descrição com a apresentação da estrutura
elementar presente no Dicionário de semiótica (GREIMAS; COURTÉS, 2008 [1979]), os
diferentes usos que o quadrado semiótico conheceu ao longo do período greimasiano, as críticas
que o modelo neste estágio sofre, e, por fim, a cientificidade que a teoria tem por padrão. Em
seguida, efetuamos uma descrição de dois estágios de desenvolvimento da noção de estrutura
elementar na semiótica tensiva, o primeiro composto por Zilberberg (1981) e o segundo pela
colaboração entre Zilberberg e Fontanille (2001). Encerramos os capítulos descritivos com a
apresentação de dois diálogos importantes estabelecidos com a semiótica através das estruturas
elementares. A primeira ocasião que trazemos é a da topologização do quadrado semiótico
proposta por Jean Petitot (1977) que estabelece uma comunicação entre semiótica e teoria das
catástrofes. Posteriormente, apresentamos os esforços de Moretti (2014) em aproximar a
semiótica e a geometria oposicional com diversos modelos de maior complexidade do que o
quadrado semiótico. Em nossas considerações finais realizamos uma análise aprofundada de
questões levantadas ao longo do texto em busca de esclarecer as tensões metodológicas e
epistemológicas em torno das estruturas elementares com o conjunto da teoria semiótica e com
o ambiente intelectual europeu, bem como especificamos o papel que as estruturas elementares
assumem na economia geral da semiótica apontando sua função descritiva e metodológica.
Além disso nos posicionamos sobre o que consideramos continuidade ou descontinuidade nos
percursos de desenvolvimento descritos anteriormente e, por fim discutimos a questão da
influência na produção e desenvolvimento das estruturas elementares da significação.

ABSTRACT
The present dissertation was dedicated to the linguistic historiographical study of the concept
of the elementary structure of meaning produced by the semiotic theory of the French line. In
this way, we rely on the historiographical discussion about historical research and on some
methodological devices developed by linguistic historiography, which we had contact through
Altman (2004), Koerner (2014), Portela (2018), and Moreira, Santos, and Portela (2021). Based
on a fundamental distinction presented by Altman (2004), we built our work as initially formed
by a chronicle, that is, a survey of data and its description, and, later, we raised it to the level of
proper historiography, with the development of interpretive discourse about the chronicle
previously organized. Then, the approach of the corpus begins with the founding text of the
semiotics discipline and our object, Sémantique Structurale (GREIMAS, 1966), and goes on to
the text that presented the first developments within the framework of this notion “The
interaction of semiotic constraints'' (GREIMAS; RASTIER, 1968). We continue the description
with the presentation of the elementary structure in the Dicionário de semiótica (GREIMAS;
COURTÉS, 2008 [1979]), the different uses that the semiotic square knew throughout the
greimasian period, the criticisms that the model suffered at this stage, and, lastly, the
scientificity that the theory has as standard. Next, we describe two stages of development of the
notion of elementary structure in the tensive semiotics, the first one composed by Zilberberg
(1981) and the second by the collaboration between Zilberberg and Fontanille (2001). We close
the descriptive chapters with the presentation of two important dialogues established with
semiotics through elementary structures. The first occasion we bring is the topologization of
the semiotic square proposed by Jean Petitot (1977), which establishes a communication
between semiotics and catastrophe theory. Subsequently, we present Moretti's (2014) efforts to
bring semiotics and oppositional geometry closer together with several models of greater
complexity than the semiotic square. In our final considerations, we carry out an in-depth
analysis of issues raised throughout the text in order to clarify the methodological and
epistemological tensions set around the elementary structures with the whole of the semiotics
theory and with the european intellectual environment, as well as we set to specify the role that
the elementary structures play in the general economy of semiotics pointing out their descriptive
and methodological function. In addition, we offer our position on what we consider as
continuity or discontinuity in the development parcourses described before and, finally, we
discuss the question of influence on the production and development of elementary structures
of meaning.
