RESUMO
Estudos linguísticos apontam que, do latim clássico ao português moderno, os verbos ‘ter’ e
‘haver’ apresentam variação. Por isso, tendo como base teórica a sociolinguística, esta pesquisa
analisou o comportamento dos verbos ‘ter’ e ‘haver’ no Português do Brasil (PB) e no Português
de Portugal (PP) escrito contemporâneo, demonstrando o funcionamento desses verbos em
estruturas existenciais, possessivas, auxiliares e modais. Os dados que formam o corpus são
cartas de leitoras da revista feminina portuguesa Ragazza, do período de 1994 a 2004, e da
revista feminina brasileira Capricho, do período de 1994 a 2005. Essas cartas foram cedidas
pelo Grupo de Estudos Variacionistas (GEVAR), grupo de pesquisa cadastrado na plataforma
CNPq e ligado aos cursos de Letras da Universidade Federal do Triângulo Mineiro (UFTM) e
da Universidade Federal de Uberlândia (UFU). No corpus do PB foram coletadas um total de
236 ocorrências e no do PP um total de 427 ocorrências. Esses dados foram transcritos em
documento word e analisados, inicialmente, no programa computacional GoldVarb 2001, de
acordo com o grupo de fatores: estruturas de uso, tempo verbal, animacidade e posição do
objeto. Os dados apontam que tanto no PB quanto no PP há predominância do verbo ‘ter’ sobre
‘haver’, tendo em vista que no corpus da revista Capricho 91% das construções foram
produzidas com a forma verbal ‘ter’ e no corpus da revista Ragazza foram 89% das ocorrências.
Portanto, a presente dissertação demonstrou que a forma verbal ‘ter’, continua em avanço nas
estruturas supracitadas, corroborando as pesquisas variacionistas que apontam que a frequência
de ‘ter’ aumenta ao longo do tempo.

THE STRUCTURES ‘TO HAVE’ AND ‘TO BE’ IN READER'S LETTER OF THE
MAGAZINES RAGAZZA AND CAPRICHO
ABSTRACT
Linguistic studies indicate that, from classic latin to modern portuguese, the verbs "to have"
and "to be" show variation. Hence, having sociolinguistics as theoretical basis, this research
analyzed the behavior of the verbs "to be" and "to have" in Brazilian Portuguese (PB) and
Portugal Portuguese (PP) in contemporary written language, demonstrating the workings of
these verbs in existential, possessives, auxiliary and modal structures. The data that composes
the corpus are reader's letters from the female portuguese magazine Ragazza, from 1994 to
2004, and from the female brazilian magazine Capricho, from 1994 to 2005. These letters were
given in by the Variationist Study Group (GEVAR), a study group registered in the CNPq
platform and linked to the Letras course of Federal University of the Triângulo Mineiro
(UFTM) and Federal University of Uberlândia (UFU). At the PB corpus were collected a total
of 236 occurrences and, at the PP a total of 427 occurrences. These data were transcribed to
word document and analyzed, first, at the computer program GoldVarb 2001, according to the
following group of factors: usage structures, verb tense, animacity and position of the object.
The data point that, both in PB and PP there is predominance of the verb "to have" over 'Tt be",
in view of the fact that, at the corpus of the Capricho magazine, 91% of the constructions were
produced with the verbal form "to have" and, at the corpus of the Ragazza magazine, 89% of
the occurrences were of such verbal form. Therefore, the following essay demonstrated that the
verbal form 'to have" continues to advance in the structures, corroborating to the variationist
researches that point that the frequency of "to have" verb grows over time.
