Abstract: Considering the poem “Ode triunfal” and some references to other poems as corpus, the
research that substantiated this thesis intended to analyze how the influences of the futurist
vanguard movement in Fernando Pessoa’s oeuvre, especially his heteronym Álvaro de Campos.
Futurism was stablished in 1909 after Filippo Tommaso Marinetti and his fellows of the Poesia
magazine published the first manifesto. The futurists considered themselves men of the future
and advocated for their aesthetic as the only one capable of reflecting the transformations in the
beginning of the 20th century, especially the technical and scientific advance and the new means
of communication and transportation. They believed that, in order to combat the past and its
ideas, they needed to act in a violent and aggressive way in life and art, besides glorifying the
most recent mechanical inventions that attested progress such as the frenetic pace of cities and
factories. For the futurists, this motivated the cult of speed and machines that became a common
theme in their artistic production. In heteronimic fiction, Campos interpreted the modern world
poet’s mask, a cosmopolitan and traveled man who learned at first-hand about urban and
industrial life and, therefore, is able to recreate the sensations caused by this frantic world.
Consequently, influenced by the vanguards environment, Álvaro de Campos imposes on his
poems of this period an irregular pace, and, in addition, he makes use of the formal futurist
vanguard elements such as the free verse and a vocabulary based on the figures of speech that
portray the multiplicity and diversity of the machine era. However, the register that the poet
compiles of modern life is far from expressing the same enthusiasm and celebration in the face
of the chaotic world of machines as the Italian futurists did. It was observed that Campos
explored characteristic themes and forms of this vanguard, but with the support of rhetorical
irony expressive resources, which convey a critical dimension to its poetic and emphasizes both
the anguish and the pain of a man immersed in a decadent and oppressive world. In that regard
the research enabled an understanding of the ways in which irony, depersonalization and
futurism are articulated in Álvaro Campos’s poetry.
