Resumo: Kate Chopin é uma das autoras mais importantes do Realismo americano, reconhecida como uma escritora moderna para a tradição literária do século XIX, sobretudo pelo viés crítico e pela abordagem temática notadamente transgressora de sua ficção. O universo feminino de suas narrativas constitui-se de personagens femininas que buscam liberdade e autoafirmação em meio à hostilidade da dominação masculina na cultura fin de siècle. The Awakening (1899), a obra-prima da autora, escandalizou a sociedade da época e consagrou-se por grande parte da crítica como um romance vulgar e mórbido ao apresentar a trajetória de autorrealização de Edna Pontellier. Por meio de atitudes subversivas, a heroína de Chopin desafia as convenções sociais e transcende as limitações da condição feminina impostas pela ideologia patriarcal. Através do mergulho epifânico no mar de Grand Isle, a protagonista desperta para um poder feminino que lhe impulsiona a buscar a emergência de sentido de suas próprias escolhas e a plenitude da vida que os papéis sociais de mãe e esposa não lhe asseguram. Nesse sentido, a presente dissertação de mestrado busca problematizar a presença do mito de Afrodite no romance por meio do reconhecimento da divindade da heroína de Chopin que se concretiza no desfecho da obra, apontando os elementos simbólicos associados à tal imagem articulada às instâncias narrativas e abordar a simbologia da deusa mítica como forma de contestação aos valores patriarcais. Para tanto, a análise será norteada pelos pressupostos teóricos de Sandra Gilbert e Susan Gubar a respeito dos estereótipos femininos construídos pela tradição literária de autoria masculina apontados na obra The Madwoman in The Attic, pela abordagem de Sandra Gilbert a respeito da presença da deusa Afrodite no romance apresentada no ensaio The Second Coming of Aphrodite, pelas considerações de Mircea Eliade, Julia Kristeva e Catherine Clément dedicadas à questão do sagrado feminino, pelos postulados de Jean-Pierre Vernant, Giuliana Ragusa, Jean Chevalier e Alain Gheerbrant acerca da deusa grega Afrodite bem como por textos críticos que embasam o valor simbólico do mar, da arte e do erotismo, cujas implicações míticas delineiam a volta da heroína para o mar como a deusa que ela representa.

Abstract: Kate Chopin is one of the most important authors of American Realism, recognized as a modern writer for the literary tradition of the nineteenth century, especially for the critical bias and the remarkably transgressive thematic approach of her fiction, the feminine universe of her narratives is composed of female characters, who seek freedom and self-assertion, amid the hostility of male domination in fin de siècle culture. The Awakening (1899), the author's masterpiece, scandalized the society of the time and was consecrated by many of critics as a vulgar and morbid novel by depicting Edna Pontellier's trajectory of self-realization. By means of subversive actions, Chopin's heroine challenges social conventions and transcends the limitations of the feminine condition imposed by patriarchal ideology. Throughout the epiphanic plunge into the sea of Grand Isle, the protagonist awakens to a feminine power that drives her to seek the emergence of meaning on her own choices and the fullness of life that the social roles of mother and wife do not assure her. In this sense, this master's thesis seeks to problematize the presence of the myth of Aphrodite in The Awakening through the recognition of the deity of Chopin's heroine that concretizes itself in the outcome of the novel, pointing out the symbolic elements associated with this image articulated in narrative instances and addressing the symbology of the mythical goddess as a form of protest to patriarchal values. Therefore, the analysis will be guided by the theoretical assumptions of Sandra Gilbert and Susan Gubar regarding the female stereotypes constructed by the literary tradition of male authorship pointed out in The Madwoman in The Attic, by Sandra Gilbert's approach to the presence of the goddess Venus in the novel presented in the essay The Second Coming of Aphrodite, by the considerations of Mircea Eliade, Julia Kristeva and Catherine Clément dedicated to the question of the sacred feminine, by the postulates of Jean-Pierre Vernant, Giuliana Ragusa, Jean Chevalier and Alain Gheerbrant regarding the Greek goddess Aphrodite as well as by critical texts that base the symbolic value of sea, art and eroticism, whose mythical implications outline the return of the heroine to the sea as the goddess she represents.
