RESUMO
O presente estudo propõe-se a analisar o personagem literário Johannes Kreisler, do escritor
alemão E. T. A. Hoffmann, segundo sua ocorrência no romance Lebensansichten des Katers
Murr, sob a luz do entendimento do ideal do gênio de acordo com a reflexão de diferentes
autores (filósofos, teólogos, escritores e críticos de maneira geral) de Inglaterra, França e
Alemanha que se ocuparam da questão entre fins do século XVII e o princípio do século XIX
na Europa. Sem desconsiderar os ecos e a influência da Antiguidade no que tange ao gênio,
este recorte histórico se justifica por permitir que sejam explicitadas as diferentes tonalidades
de que se reveste o entendimento acerca do conceito durante o período, assim como por
possibilitar distinguir as características que mais fortemente marcarão a compreensão
romântica do termo de um modo geral. A hipótese de trabalho frente ao fenômeno que
primeiramente nos chama atenção, qual seja, a influência exercida pelo personagem literário
Kreisler sobre alguns dos principais expoentes do romantismo musical europeu no século
XIX, levanta a questão de que, para além da identificação pela temática musical propriamente
dita, talvez a confluência de um ideal de gênio romântico na caracterização do personagem
literário seja determinante na influência exercida pelo Kapellmeister Kreisler.

ABSTRACT
The present work aims at analyzing the literary character Johannes Kreisler, from the German
writer E. T. A. Hoffmann, in its appearance in the novel Lebensansichten des Katers Murr,
according to the understanding of the idea of genius from different authors (philosophers,
theologians, writers and critics in general) of England, France and Germany who addressed
their efforts to the discussion of the concept between the end of the 17th century and the
beginning of the 19th century in Europe. Without disregarding the echoes and the influence of
Classic Antiquity to the concept of genius, this approach through means of this historic time
justifies itself by allowing the varied colors concerning the understanding of the concept
during the period to be made explicit and also by allowing the traits which are going to be a
mark to the wide romantic comprehension of the term to be specified. The research hypothesis
in face of the phenomenon that first calls our attention, namely the influence exerted by the
literary character Kreisler upon some of the most noticeable figures of musical Romanticism
in Europe during the 19th century, brings up the question that perhaps, beyond the relation to
the musical thematic, a confluence of an ideal of romantic genius in the occurrence of the
literary character may be determining to the influence exerted by the Kapellmeister Kreisler.
